All-on-X Materials: Acrylic vs PMMA vs Zirconia
The bridge material drives a significant chunk of the All-on-X total — and longevity. Acrylic temporaries typically last 1–3 years. Monolithic zirconia, the current gold standard, lasts 10–20+ years with maintenance.
Acrylic (PMMA) temporary
Placed same-day as surgery in standard workflows. Lightweight, esthetic enough, but wears and stains. Designed as a 3–6 month bridge to the final prosthetic — though some patients keep them longer to defer cost.
Monolithic zirconia (current standard)
Milled from a single zirconia puck. Extremely strong, stain-resistant, biocompatible. Adds $3,000–$8,000 over acrylic. Lifespan 10–20+ years with good hygiene.
Layered zirconia / porcelain-fused
More natural esthetics, but layered porcelain can chip. Generally not recommended for full-arch where occlusal forces are high.
Titanium bar reinforced
A titanium substructure with acrylic teeth — old-school but still in use. Heavy, durable, less esthetic than monolithic zirconia.
Frequently asked
How long does a zirconia All-on-X bridge last?
Published estimates: 10–20+ years with proper hygiene and night guard use. The implants themselves can last 25+ years; the bridge is the more replaceable component.
Is monolithic zirconia worth the upgrade over acrylic?
For most patients with long horizons, yes — the lifespan and stain resistance pay back the $3K–$8K premium over a 10-year window.
