What is it?
Cone-beam computed tomography creates a 3D model of the jaws, teeth, sinuses, and nerves to support implant, orthodontic, and surgical planning.
What problem does it solve?
Reveals bone volume, nerve position, sinus anatomy, and pathology that 2D X-rays cannot fully show.
Who might benefit?
Patients planning implants, extractions, orthodontics, or complex restorative work.
What are the limitations?
Higher radiation than a simple 2D X-ray, so it is used when clinically justified. Requires trained interpretation.
Availability
Available from most oral surgeons, periodontists, and many modern dental offices.
Regulatory status
CBCT units are FDA-cleared and used under state radiology rules.
